Guide

Set up SABnzbd
with EasyUsenet.

SABnzbd is the standard in the Usenet community: open source, free and at home on practically any device. It runs in the browser and downloads, repairs and unpacks automatically.

Guides · SABnzbd
Runs in the browser. SABnzbd has no classic program window – you control it through a web interface at http://localhost:8080. That sounds more technical than it is: after installation the page opens by itself.
1

Install SABnzbd

Download the version for your system from the official site and install it like any other program. On a NAS you will find SABnzbd in the respective package centre – on Synology, for instance, through the community sources.

  • Windows, macOS, Linux, Synology, QNAP, Unraid, Raspberry Pi
  • About 150 MB of free disk space
  • A browser – nothing more is needed
2

Start the setup wizard

On first launch the wizard opens in the browser. Choose your language and click Next until you reach the server details.

3

Enter the server details

Enter our details and tick TLS/SSL. Your username and password are in the e-mail you received after ordering.

4

Test the connection

Click Test Server. If “Connection successful” appears, everything is in place. Then finish the wizard and you land on the overview.

No connection? Almost always the port is wrong or TLS/SSL is not switched on. Check 563 with TLS/SSL and the spelling of your username. If that does not help, write to us.
5

Set the folders

Under Settings → Folders you set where finished downloads go. A temporary folder on a fast disk and a target folder on the large drive is the usual split.

  • Incomplete downloads: fast SSD
  • Finished downloads: large drive
  • Both folders should be on the same machine
6

Start your first download

Drag an NZB file into the browser window or upload it via Add NZB. SABnzbd downloads across all 100 connections in parallel, verifies the data, repairs it where needed and unpacks automatically at the end.

FAQ

Questions about SABnzbd

What we are asked most about this guide.

Is SABnzbd free?
Yes, SABnzbd is open source and free. You only pay for your Usenet access with us.
Why does a browser window open?
Because SABnzbd is controlled through a web interface. The program runs in the background and you operate it at http://localhost:8080 – reachable from a phone on the same network too.
Does SABnzbd run on my NAS?
Yes, packages are available for Synology, QNAP, Unraid and most other systems. On very low-powered devices NZBGet is lighter.
Which port should I use?
563 with TLS/SSL switched on. That encrypts the connection, at no extra cost.
How many connections should I set?
100 – that is our maximum, and it is included in every plan. Fewer only slows you down, more gains nothing.
Do I also need an indexer?
Yes. SABnzbd downloads the data but does not search for it. You find the NZB files at an indexer and hand them to SABnzbd.
Setup is not working – what now?
Write to our support team. We know SABnzbd well and will set it up with you – in English, Dutch, German, French or Spanish.
